Protein powder tips for sensitive stomachs

Registered dietitian Natalie Allen explains.

February 27, 2026 by Strategic Communication

What should you look for in a protein powder if you have digestive issues?

In a recent Verywell Health article, registered dietitian Natalie Allen shared that simple formulas with minimal additives are best for sensitive stomachs. Artificial sweeteners like sugar alcohols and thickening agents, such as guar gum or xanthan gum may cause bloating or diarrhea.

She emphasizes that most people can meet their protein needs through whole foods like chicken, fish, eggs, beans and yogurt. Supplements should come second.

Allen is also a clinical associate professor of nutrition and dietetics in the School of Health Sciences at Missouri State University.
