Deciding between veggie or beef burgers

Registered dietitian Daniela Novotny shares what really matters when choosing a burger.

August 28, 2025 by Strategic Communication

Veggie burgers can be a good source of fiber and antioxidants. But they aren’t always the healthier option.

In a recent Martha Stewart article, registered dietitian Dr. Daniela Novotny explained that some veggie burgers are highly processed and low in protein. In addition, she noted that beef burgers offer high-quality protein and key nutrients like iron and vitamin B12 when they are prepared with lean meat and minimal additives.

Novotny is also a senior instructor of nutrition and dietetics in the School of Health Sciences at Missouri State University.
