Join LGBTQ+ Heritage Month celebrations this October

Grey Garris outlines university efforts toward a more inclusive campus.

In summer 2021, Missouri State University welcomed Grey Garris, assistant director of multicultural programs and LGBTQ+ student services.

Garris’ approach to LGBTQ+ student services is to recognize the unique ways different communities need support.

“I hope to form support groups with different designations of individuals within the queer community across campus to make sure each individual is receiving the support they need, rather than a group approach,” Garris said.

Along with new and continued efforts on campus, multicultural programs will host live and virtual events throughout October to celebrate LGBTQ+ Heritage Month.

Highlighted events

Oct. 1

Kiki at the MRC, 6 p.m., Multicultural Resource Center

Celebrate the start of LGBTQ+ Heritage Month with a social hour at the MRC with live music and a drag show.

Oct. 5

Pride, Praise and Protest, 8 p.m., Plaster Student Union 400 or virtually

Enjoy an inclusive worship experience.

Oct. 12

U.S. Politics: LGBTQ+, 5:30 p.m., Plaster Student Union 315 or virtually

Join a student and faculty panel to discuss political movements and policies affecting queer communities.

Oct. 19

Guest Speaker Night, 7 p.m., Plaster Student Union Theater

Hear from a surprise guest speaker.

Oct. 22

Good Queen Fun, 7 p.m., Plaster Student Union Ballroom West or virtually

Join the annual drag show, featuring local drag performers.

Oct. 26

Queer P.O.C. Panel, 5:30 p.m., Plaster Student Union 315 or virtually

Find out more about the unique experiences of queer and trans people of color.

Oct. 29

Night of Green Carnations, 6:30 p.m., Plaster Student Union Ballroom

Socialize, eat, dance and meet the LGBTQ+ campus community.
