Missouri State University President Richard B. Williams received a positive evaluation from the Board of Governors following his second year in office. The board recognized the significant progress he led on priorities established for the year, including implementing the university’s strategic plan, promoting operational excellence, preparing for long-term sustainability and engaging university stakeholders.

“President Williams has shown exceptional leadership and vision for Missouri State University,” said Board Chair Melissa Gourley. “He has moved the university from planning to action, with a clear focus on our strategic plan, operational excellence and student success. His thoughtful, strategic leadership is positioning Missouri State for continued success.”

A primary focus of Williams’ second year was enacting Igniting Opportunities: The Strategic Plan for Missouri State University and securing reaffirmation of the university’s accreditation.

To advance the strategic plan, the university established and implemented rigorous action plans to move priorities forward and track progress. Williams will host the State of the University on Oct. 2, where he will highlight significant progress made over the past year in implementing the university’s strategic plan.

Missouri State also achieved significant accreditation milestones on both campuses. Following an extensive, multiyear evaluation, the Higher Learning Commission reaffirmed the Springfield campus’ accreditation for another 10 years with no qualifications, finding that the university met all criteria and core components for accreditation.

West Plains also demonstrated meaningful progress, successfully completing the work necessary for HLC to remove the campus from accreditation probation. Together, the outcomes reflect substantial universitywide efforts to strengthen institutional effectiveness, academic quality and continuous improvement.

Williams advanced several operational priorities. The university initiated a comprehensive assessment of human resources-related functions across the institution, hired and onboarded new senior leaders, and established an ombudsman program to support faculty, staff and students. New peer and aspirational groups were identified and adopted to strengthen institutional benchmarking and inform future decision-making.

Several initiatives focused on Missouri State’s long-term growth and sustainability. The university completed and adopted its campus master plan and finalized an Intercollegiate Athletics facilities master plan.

Williams continued efforts to strengthen relationships with faculty, staff, students and community leaders through listening sessions, a town hall, numerous student gatherings, and active participation and outreach to local organizations and businesses.

“Our first year was about listening, learning and establishing a direction for Missouri State. This year was about turning that direction into action,” Williams said. “I’m proud of the progress our faculty, staff and students have made together. And I’m grateful for the Board of Governors and our community partners who continue to support Missouri State and the opportunities we create for our students and the communities we serve.

“These days ‘Go Bears’ feels like it means so much more. There is a lot of excitement and momentum building behind Missouri State. I couldn’t be more proud of the progress we are making together.”
