Students across the nation will have new opportunities to explore artificial intelligence and emerging technologies through a $489,183 National Science Foundation award at Missouri State University.

The department of computer science in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CNAS) received the three-year award for the “REU Site: Applied Research in Deep Learning” project. The award begins Oct. 1, 2026.

The project is led by principal investigator Dr. Mohammed Belkhouche, with co-principal investigators Dr. Siming Liu and Dr. Mukulika Ghoshe. The REU team also includes professors Dr. Jamil Saquer and Dr. Hui Liu.

The award is the department’s first NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site grant.

“This achievement reflects Missouri State’s growing strength in machine learning research and its commitment to developing the next generation of scientists and innovators,” said CNAS Dean Dr. Magdalena Toda.

Students get hands-on experience

Over three summers, the project will give 30 undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct research in deep learning, cybersecurity, robotics, autonomous systems and social media analysis.

Students will work closely with faculty members while developing research, problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills. They also will participate in professional development activities and connect with peers and industry professionals.

“This award is a significant milestone for the department of computer science and reflects the growing depth and quality of research being conducted by our faculty,” said Dr. Ajay Katangur, department head.

“As our department expands its work in AI, deep learning, cybersecurity and autonomous systems, this REU Site provides an important opportunity to bring talented undergraduate students into that research environment.”

The program will continue throughout the academic year, with monthly meetings. Students will have opportunities to share research results, explore conferences and receive guidance about careers and graduate education.

From learning to research

Participating students will engage in meaningful research that extends their classroom learning.

“Hands-on research allows students to move beyond learning established concepts in the classroom and work on problems for which the answers are not already known,” Belkhouche said.

Students will explore how AI can be used to address real-world challenges while gaining experience that can prepare them for graduate education and careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

Building the new generation of researchers

The NSF award will strengthen Missouri State’s research community while creating a pathway for undergraduate students to develop their own research ideas.

“We’re especially excited to see students’ progress from arriving at Mo State as undergraduate participants to developing their own research ideas, producing meaningful results and presenting their original research at the end of the program,” Belkhouche said.
