Missouri State University’s Board of Governors honored three faculty members and three staff members whose work exemplifies the university’s public affairs mission.
The recipients received the prestigious Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Public Affairs. Presented annually, this award recognizes university employees who demonstrate ethical leadership, cultural competence and community engagement through their contributions on campus.
Each honoree receives $1,500 to fund research, professional development or initiatives that further public affairs efforts at Missouri State.
Faculty recipients
Dr. Jason McCollom is an associate professor of history and department chair of arts, humanities and social sciences at Missouri State University-West Plains.
McCollom’s leadership in the Ozarks Heritage Research Center and Ozarks Studies Symposium highlights his commitment to making scholarship a shared civic endeavor. Through partnerships, archival work and student-centered research, he connects academic work with public audiences in accessible and meaningful ways.
Kaleigh Pickett is the assistant director of the School of Special Education, Leadership and Professional Studies and program director of Pathways for Paraprofessionals in the College of Education.
Pickett leads Missouri State’s Registered Apprenticeships program, supporting school districts and future educators through flexible pathways. She also reinstated the Student Council for Exceptional Children and helped develop key programs that strengthen the special education workforce.
Dr. William Sandel is an associate professor and assistant school director – outreach and partnerships in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice in the Reynolds College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities.
Sandel’s work focuses on translating research into community impact through statewide partnerships and training. He has helped deliver active shooter response training across Missouri and serves on advisory groups supporting community preparedness.
Staff recipients
Dr. Nina Barudzic is director of the Mary Jean Price Walls Student Resource Center – Bear Cave.
Barudzic fosters belonging, academic success and engagement through initiatives, such as ChaTea events, Lunch and Learn programs, Heritage Month celebrations and the Leadership Institute. She also mentors students and supports first-generation and first-year students through TRIO Upward Bound and the Engaged Citizen program.
Suzanne Mwengi is academic administrative assistant III in the Center for Academic Success and Transition.
Mwengi supports students and colleagues with a patient, intentional approach, guiding first-year students and mentoring employees while promoting a culture of respect and inclusion. She also engages with the Peace Corps and Peace Corps Prep program.
Darren Wienberg is a senior academic advisor in the Reynolds College Center for Student Success.
Wienberg is recognized for his student-centered approach and ability to simplify complex processes. He developed an online form that allows students to request academic program changes at any time, improving accessibility and efficiency. His work enhances student success, strengthens institutional processes and supports the university’s broader mission.
