Ozarks Public Television’s (OPT) newest documentary, “Lost and Found on Route 66” will premiere at 8 p.m. May 11.
Created in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of America’s beloved Mother Road, the hourlong film explores Route 66’s origins as a successor to historic travel routes and its rise as a world‑famous symbol of American car culture and innovation.
The documentary examines how the route became “lost” as interstate travel replaced it, reshaping how Americans move across the country and impacting the businesses, towns, cultures and traditions along the way. At the same time, it highlights the individuals and communities who preserved and revitalized this enduring icon of Americana.
“It’s more than just a road; it’s a decades long story of everyone who traveled it or built their livelihoods along Route 66. It changed the trajectory of American culture,” said film producer Nico Burasco. “As the centennial approaches, we wanted to not only document the bygone heyday of the road but talk to the pioneers who are creating a new future for the old route.”
OPT General Manager Rachel Knight added, “As an icon of American culture, Route 66 has drawn generations of travelers to the Ozarks. This film highlights the distinctive places along the road and the singular experience of driving Route 66 itself. ‘Lost and Found on Route 66’ explores the people, businesses and stories giving new life to the world’s most famous highway — and invites viewers to discover what’s been lost and found along the way.”
A century after its creation, Route 66 continues to surprise travelers willing to leave the interstate and follow the original road. From once‑forgotten landmarks now seeing renewed attention to bold new ventures rooted in tradition, the Mother Road has found ways not only to endure, but to thrive in the modern era.
Sponsored by Liberty Utilities, Great Southern Bank, Citizens Memorial Hospital and Jan and Gary Baumgartner, “Lost and Found on Route 66” premieres on OPT’s main channel at 8 p.m. May 11. The documentary will re-air at 7 p.m. May 12, 8 p.m. May 14 and 21 and 1:30 p.m. May 24. It will be available to stream on video.optv.org on May 12.
