Ozarks Public Television’s (OPT) newest documentary, “Wild Ozarks” will premiere at 8 p.m. April 20.
The program explores the rich biodiversity of the Ozarks and highlights efforts to conserve its unique wildlife and natural habitats. Showcasing the region’s diverse flora and fauna, the film seeks to raise awareness about the importance of preserving this vital ecosystem.
“Wild Ozarks” examines the impacts of climate change and human intervention on local landscapes and species, as well as the science-driven stewardship and community efforts that have long defined the Ozarks’ approach to protecting its natural heritage. From historical conservation milestones to ongoing restoration projects, “Wild Ozarks” reveals a living legacy of environmental recovery and resilience.
Through efforts that range from restoring fire-dependent glades and reintroducing elk to safeguarding the endangered Ozark hellbender, every initiative forms part of a broader story: one of a region deeply committed to preserving its wild spaces.
According to documentary producer Dax Bedall, “Wild Ozarks” is about more than nature; it’s about our responsibility to care for the land we live on.
“This film shows how science, stewardship and community values have shaped the Ozarks for generations, and why protecting these landscapes matters now more than ever. It honors the legacy of the people who care for our wild places and shows how conservation continues to evolve in the face of real environmental challenges,” he said.
OPT General Manager Rachel Knight added, “‘Wild Ozarks’ reflects our deep commitment to telling the stories of this region and the people who work tirelessly to protect it. The Ozarks’ natural beauty is one of our greatest resources, and we’re proud to share a film that celebrates both its wonders and the ongoing efforts to preserve them for future generations.”
Sponsored by Great Southern Bank, Wild Birds Unlimited and Jan and Gary Baumgartner, “Wild Ozarks” premieres on OPT’s main channel at 8 p.m. April 20 and re-airs at 7 p.m. April 21 and 8 p.m. April 23. The documentary will be available to stream on video.optv.org on April 27.
