Sen. Lincoln Hough, Rep. Elijah Haahr selected for Government Excellence Award

Awards recognize exemplary support.

October 25, 2019 by Strategic Communication

Missouri State University has 10 million reasons to say thanks. This spring, representatives in the General Assembly advocated on behalf of the university, and ultimately passed a budget that increased the university’s core funding by $10 million.

Sen. Lincoln Hough and Rep. Elijah Haahr stand out for their leadership on this issue. Because of their support, the Board of Governors voted today (Oct. 25) to award the 2019 Government Excellence Award to these representatives.

During Hough’s time in the Missouri General Assembly, he spearheaded and advocated for many bills benefiting the university.

In 2015, as a member of the Missouri House of Representatives, he championed a capital appropriation of $18.9 million on behalf of the university. This bonding package allowed MSU to renovate buildings on both the Springfield and West Plains campuses.

Haahr, the first Springfieldian to serve as speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives, brought Springfield’s needs to the forefront. He built momentum for projects that were important to the region and university.

“Without the tremendous leadership of Sen. Hough and Rep. Haahr, Missouri State would not have received the $10 million equity increase,” said Missouri State President Clif Smart. “This support is vital to our ability to expand our programs and build a strong workforce.”

About the Government Excellence Award

This is the fifth year this award has been presented. Prior recipients include Sen. Jay Wasson, Gov. Mike Parson, Dr. Michael Nietzel and Sen. Roy Blunt.

The university president and administrative council recommend recipients. Executive committees of the Faculty Senate, Staff Senate and Student Government Association support the nomination prior to going before the Board of Governors for approval.
