Women are vastly underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Early exposure to the subjects can increase young students’ interest, participation and ability.
The McQueary College of Health and Human Services (MCHHS) at Missouri State University knows the value of educating young women about healthcare, STEM and careers. It can empower them to pursue their passion early.
To help increase interest in these fields, MCHHS will host Expanding Your Horizons, a science workshop for girls in grade 6-8, Nov. 3.
Guardians of science
Hosted by MCHHS every other year, Expanding Your Horizons enables students to immerse themselves in science. They also get to explore healthcare topics and work in simulation labs.
The theme of this year’s program, “Guardians of Science Herstory,” focuses on engaging and educating girls interested in health sciences.
For a young student with an interest in the medical field, an experience like Expanding Your Horizons can be life changing.
“Many of the college students who volunteer for Expanding Your Horizons have cited their own experience in middle school as their introduction into the possibilities of a future science or clinical health career,” said Colette Witkowski, head of the biomedical sciences department.
Missouri State students can sign up to volunteer for the upcoming program.
