Communication book author receives national attention
Dr. Julie Masterson, professor of communication sciences and disorders at Missouri State University, and her co-author Kenn Apel, professor and chair of communication sciences and disorders at the University of South Carolina, have been named 2013 Media Champions by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association for their book, “Beyond Baby Talk.”
Originally published in 2001, Masterson and Apel released a revised and updated version of their book in 2012, earning them this prestigious award.
“Publishing ‘Beyond Baby Talk’ has provided a valuable platform to share accurate information about language-literacy skills and the role that parents can play in their child’s development,” said Masterson. “ASHA’s recognition of the efforts of my co-author and me is truly an honor.”
The book is a guide to language and literacy development for parents and caregivers. Its popularity has even led to a syndicated article, featuring the authors’ tips for raising a good communicator, to be published in more than 2,200 newspapers.
