A waiter stands in a doorway with a tray full of food.

Is tipping culture out of control? A recent poll says yes.

Missouri State hospitality expert Dr. Melissa Dallas talks consumer sentiment.

April 3, 2024 by Strategic Communication

Tipping isn’t just for waiters anymore. Hairdressers, delivery drivers, baristas and others have all joined the fray. In fact, my establishments now include suggested tip amounts on your bill – often starting at 15% and going up.

A recent WalletHub survey found 75% of Americans think tipping has gone too far.

Dr. Melissa Dallas, professor emeritus, department of hospitality leadership at Missouri State University, is in agreement with respondents to the survey, saying “the tipping culture has become out of control” and it’s partly because of the reduced profit margins experienced by many businesses in recent years. She spoke with Fox Business about it.
