Public Affairs Conference to focus on inclusive excellence
Missouri State University will host the ninth annual Public Affairs Conference, themed “Inclusive Excellence.” The event, which will be held April 9-12 and bring a variety of speakers with global perspectives to Springfield, is free and open to the public.
Speakers scheduled at the conference include: Maura Cullen, diversity speaker and trainer; Freeman Hrabowski, president, University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Charlton McIlwain, associate professor of media, culture and communication, New York University; Dennis Reigle, special projects business adviser, American Institute of CPAs; and Edward St. John, professor, department of educational leadership and policy, University of Michigan.
Among the wide variety of panel discussions are: “Inclusiveness: Is that what made Apple great?” “It’s more than what women want: It’s what society needs,” “Refugees in the United States: Overcoming the Challenges,” “Why does queer = fear?” “Looking inside poverty from the outside,” and many more.
A complete list of presenters and panel presentations is available online.
“Inclusive excellence is a call for the university to actively foster institutional transformation,” said Dr. Gilbert Brown, this year’s conference chair. “Developing a seamless web of curricular and out-of-classroom learning experiences will help our students position themselves to not only re-imagine a different world, but help them acquire the frameworks and skills to be change agents who fly above and below the radar screen and bring about both institutional change and change in society.”
Free parking will be available for the event in the visitor’s lot #13, located off National and Monroe. Additional parking is available at BearPark North, with entrances off Cherry and Elm, as well as BearPark South, located at Grand and Holland. A free shuttle service will provide transportation to Plaster Student Union from both parking garages.
