Growing demand for elderberry products has coincided with a sharp increase in U.S. land area devoted to elderberry cultivation in recent years.

Missouri State contributes to Advancing American Elderberry research

Researchers are working to better understand and support the production of the American elderberry.

Missouri State University biology graduate student Jenny Burrow is researching pollination ecology in American elderberry, with a focus on which insects visit the plant’s flowers and how those visits influence fruit production.

The research contributes to the Advancing American Elderberry project, a nationwide effort examining the crop’s potential as interest in elderberry products continues to grow.

Associate biology professor Dr. Avery Russell provides additional perspective on pollination ecology, offering context for how pollination research fits into broader questions of plant reproduction and agriculture.
