The Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Esports Championship returns for its second year on April 12. 

Matches begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 5:30 p.m. 

Hosted at Missouri State University’s Level 1 Game Center in the Plaster Student Union (PSU), this event will feature the conference’s top four teams competing in Overwatch, Valorant, Rocket League and Super Smash Brothers.  

Spectators are invited to immerse themselves in the fast-paced action with TVs and projectors providing an optimal viewing experience. The event is free and open to the public. 

The championship aims to engage the local community and showcase the growth of collegiate esports.  

Missouri State’s esports team 

Missouri State has three competing teams, totaling 16 students. Each student receives a $1,500 scholarship. This marks the first year scholarships have been awarded within the MVC esports program, underscoring the growing significance of competitive gaming in higher education. 

“Our esports program has experienced significant growth and increased student interest over the past two years,” said Terry Weber, PSU director and esports advisor. “In addition to adding scholarships, the Level 1 Game Center has become a central hub for esports and fostering a strong and engaged student community.”  

Players are gaining more than just gaming experience — esports is enriching their overall campus life. 

“For me, esports has been an extremely valuable part of my experience since I often struggle to get out and go to events,” said Keegan Harper, sophomore Overwatch player. “It has given me a place to belong, meet people who share my hobbies and feel part of something important on campus.”  

Upcoming summer camps 

Besides the championships, Missouri State will host esports camps this summer, offering young aspiring players a chance to sharpen their skills and experience competitive gaming firsthand.

The middle school camps in June and July offer an engaging experience combining challenges, team competitions and skill-building activities.  

Each camp features STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)-accredited programming led by university coaches and athletes. Participants will enjoy a unique blend of recreational and competitive gameplay.
