Hidden treasures, family heirlooms and fascinating stories will take center stage at Ozarks Public Television’s (OPT) Roots & Relics, a new event celebrating the objects, collections and memories that connect us to our past.

Presented by Easter Law Firm, Roots & Relics will take place from noon-5 p.m. Oct. 3 at the DoubleTree Hotel Convention Center in Springfield.

What’s in store

Roots & Relics brings together professional appraisers, collectors and historians for an afternoon of discovery and learning. Guests will be able to explore antiques and collectibles, learn how to preserve family treasures, attend educational sessions and uncover the history behind items that have been passed down through generations.

“Every family has objects that tell a story,” said OPT General Manager Rachel Knight. “Whether it’s a piece of jewelry, a quilt, military memorabilia, a photograph or an item tucked away in an attic, these treasures connect us to the people, places and experiences that have shaped our lives. Roots & Relics is about celebrating those connections and helping people better understand the stories they hold in their hands.”

Beyond the appraisal tables, attendees can enjoy a series of educational workshops that bring history to life. Sessions will explore how papermaking and bookbinding helped preserve human stories and knowledge across generations; demonstrate the techniques and cultural impact of traditional printmaking; and examine how Ozarks artisans transformed practical handicrafts into sought-after souvenirs during the heyday of Route 66 travel.

Whether bringing an item to be appraised or simply coming to watch the discoveries unfold, the event is designed for everyone, from seasoned collectors to those curious about the history behind a family heirloom. Guests will also have opportunities to connect with local historians, appraisers and fellow enthusiasts who share an appreciation for the stories that make the Ozarks unique.

“In many ways, Roots & Relics reflects the mission of public media,” Knight said. “We believe stories matter, and often those stories begin with an object that sparks a memory or a conversation. This event creates opportunities for people to learn, connect with one another and gain a deeper appreciation for the history that surrounds us every day.”
