Dr. Johannes Strobel is Missouri State University’s new Graduate College dean.
He begins work Aug. 18. He will replace longtime dean Dr. Julie Masterson, who retires June 30.
“Dr. Strobel is an ideal choice to lead the Graduate College into its next chapter. He brings the right mix of experience and innovative thinking, and he’ll help us meet this pivotal moment in graduate education at Missouri State,” said Dr. Tamera Jahnke, interim provost.
“We’re thrilled that he’s joining our academic leadership team.”
More about Strobel

Strobel brings experience in a range of faculty and administrative roles, including at the University of Missouri, Texas A&M University and Purdue University. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated leadership in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and computer science education and interdisciplinary research collaboration across colleges and disciplines.
Since 2022, he has served as the associate dean of research and graduate studies at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), a research intensive and open access university. In his time at UTEP, he established a full-service research support office for the College of Education, led an endowed center for K–12 computer science education and oversaw business development and grant efforts that resulted in $9 million of funding.
“This is an exciting era for graduate education at Missouri State, and the future is filled with possibilities,” Strobel said.
“I’m honored to contribute to the university’s dedication to public affairs, the commitment to training tomorrow’s workforce and supporting a culture of research. I can’t wait to learn, get involved and build relationships in this vibrant community.”
Starting July 1, Graduate College Associate Dean Dr. Carrisa Hoelscher will step in as interim dean until Strobel assumes the role.
