Ozarks Public Television’s (OPT) newest locally produced history documentary, “Shad Heller: Master of His Craft” will premiere at 8 p.m. June 9.

The film showcases the legacy of Lloyd ‘Shad’ Heller and his mentorship of crafters of the Ozarks. It explores the life and contributions of Heller, a beloved actor and craftsman in Branson, Missouri.

Known for his role as the blacksmith at Silver Dollar City and his involvement in the creation of the “Toby Show,” as well as being the original shepherd and co-writer of the Outdoor Drama at Shepherd of the Hills, Heller left an indelible mark on the Ozarks and the community of Branson.

“Shad’s story is a heartfelt celebration of a man whose love for blacksmithing, showmanship and community in Branson touches everyone who values hard work and a good laugh,” said producer Brent Slane. “From forging Ozark engagement rings to mentoring young crafters with his warm, generous spirit, his legacy is so relatable; it’s like sitting with an old friend who reminds you to keep smiling, no matter what.”

Through interviews with historians, fellow crafters and those who knew him personally, “Shad Heller: Master of His Craft” delves into Heller’s journey from a carnival worker to a celebrated figure in Branson’s entertainment and craft scene. The documentary also features footage of the “Toby Show” and Heller’s blacksmith demonstrations, highlighting the skill and artistry that made him a beloved figure in the community.
