When classes began yesterday (Aug. 17), 19,733 students were enrolled in the Missouri State University Springfield campus.

Overall enrollment is down 2.9%. However, degree-seeking graduate student enrollment set a new record, increasing by 10.7%.

Enrollment picture is stronger than expected

The number of students graduating from high school is down both in Missouri and nationally. A year ago, Missouri State estimated that enrollment this fall might be down by more than 800 students.

As the COVID-19 global pandemic unfolded, the university budgeted for a decrease in enrollment of as much as 1,500 students.

“With COVID-19 and the decrease in the number of high school graduates, we fully expected to see a significant decrease in enrollment this fall,” said Missouri State President Clif Smart.

“Over the last six months, we’ve implemented an aggressive communication plan to reassure new and returning students about our plans to safely reopen campus. We’re starting the semester in a much stronger position than we anticipated.”

Enrollment increases in several strategic areas

While overall enrollment is down, enrollment in several key areas increased:

• The number of underrepresented students increased by 3.9% to 2,722.
• Degree-seeking graduate student enrollment increased by 10.7% to 3,711.
• The number of new undergraduate transfer students increased by 3.5% to 1,437.
• Out of state enrollment increased by 8.7% to 2,975.

Official enrollment report available Sept. 24

The change of schedule and late registration period will continue on the Springfield campus through Aug. 21. Registration in high school dual credit courses and other special courses will continue through early September.

Official enrollment reports will be based on enrollment at the end of the day on Sept. 22. Reports should be available Sept. 24.
