Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen

Are protests in Hong Kong positive for Taiwanese leader?

Asian politics expert Dr. Dennis Hickey weighs in.

July 2, 2019 by Strategic Communication

Taiwan is closely following the recent protests in Hong Kong. The protests may be bolstering the confidence of Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen as she continues to resist Beijing’s pressure for political unification and win a second term in next year’s elections.

Dr. Dennis Hickey, distinguished professor of political science at Missouri State University, shares with the Associated Press that he expects Tsai’s administration to make the most of the “one country, two systems” issue as a cudgel against her opponents.
