June 4, 2019 by Strategic Communication

There is a new chief information officer (CIO) at Missouri State University.

Jeff Coiner comes to Missouri State from the City of Springfield, where he was director of information systems. He succeeds Jeff Morrissey, who recently retired.

Coiner’s appointment as CIO is effective July 8. MSU Director of Computer Services Theresa McCoy will serve as interim CIO until then.

“Jeff brings a wealth of experience in information technology leadership to Missouri State,” said President Clif Smart. “I’m confident he will enrich the learning environment of the campus community through the innovative use of IT.”

In his new role, Coiner will lead and manage the units of the Information Services division at MSU. He will oversee system-wide planning, management, security and coordination of technology resources, as well as support the university’s ongoing digital transformation efforts.

Extensive IT experience

Coiner has more than three decades of experience in the IT field. He has served in his current role since 2007, managing an IT budget of $5 million for the third largest city in Missouri.

Before working for the City of Springfield, Coiner was the director of information technology at Northrop Grumman Litton Interconnect in Springfield for two years. He has also held several other information technology positions in Monett; Bartlesville, Oklahoma; and Guayama, Puerto Rico.

A fellow Bear

Coiner, who grew up in West Plains, graduated from Missouri State in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems. In 1997, he received a Master of Business Administration from Oklahoma State University.
