When we look at history, there’s something that is often missing: Women. 

Too often, women are left out of the conversation or the narrative being written.  

Womxn’s HERstory Month celebrates extraordinary women and recognizes their accomplishments.  

“This is an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on all of the things that womxn have done, are doing and will continue to strive toward,” said Christina Gardner, Missouri State University multicultural programs graduate assistant.

Celebrate HERstory 

“Womxn” is a more inclusive term used to include femme identifying individuals.  

“So often, womxn voices are silenced,” Gardner said. “Their stories are overlooked, and their experiences fall into the shadows.”

Some highlighted events for Womxn’s HERstory Month include:  

March 4  

SpokeHER Word will kick off the celebration. It is an annual spoken word, music and art event. It will begin at 5 p.m. at Big Momma’s Coffee and Espresso Bar, 217 Commercial St.  

March 7 

Dr. Tanya Whipple, MSU senior instructor of psychology, will lead a discussion on womxn and sex. The discussion begins at 3:30 p.m. in Cheek Hall, room 102. 

March 27 

The Womxn of Distinction Awards is back. The reception is at 5 p.m. in the Davis-Harrington Welcome Center.  

The Womxn of Distinction Awards recognize four women or femme identifying individuals for their dedication to the university and community.  

“Womxn often go unrecognized for the phenomenal work that they do,” Gardner said. “This is an attempt to combat that.” 

April 4 

Keynote speaker Patrisse Cullors, co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Global network, will speak about social justice issues as a queer woman. The event starts at 7 p.m. in the Plaster Student Union theater.
