Prestigious fellowship creates, improves economics programs

Dr. Benjamin Onyango will work with Machakos University in Kenya.

December 11, 2018 by Strategic Communication

The Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program awarded Dr. Benjamin Onyango a fellowship to travel to Kenya. He will work with Dr. Charles Ombuki, dean of the School of Business and Economics, at Machakos University. They will establish a new master’s program.

About the project

Onyango, professor of agriculture at Missouri State University, will develop a curriculum for the new agricultural economics master’s degree. He will also review agriculture economics units and a recently developed economics master’s program.

Onyango, who specializes in agricultural economics, and Ombuki have 90 days to implement their plan. In that short span of time, they aim to do several things:

  • Create a master’s program in agricultural economics
  • Train and mentor academic staff
  • Enrich agricultural economics related courses through review
  • Engage with students

Onyango will leave in late March to start the project April 1. He will stay until June 30.
