Black History Month in February honors the black community in America: the culture, history and achievements.

“We will look at the important contributions that the black community has given to the U.S.,” said Yvania Garcia-Pusateri, executive director of multicultural programs at Missouri State University.

Highlights

This year, two main events will be a showing of Marvel’s “Black Panther,” and a banquet in honor of the African Diaspora.

The showing of “Black Panther” is at 5 p.m. Feb. 19 at Regal College Station Stadium 14.

The banquet will be an experience of black cultures through food, presentations, performances and a fashion show. Sankofa: Exploring the Diaspora will be at 5 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Plaster Student Union Grand Ballroom. The banquet is free to attend, but reservations are required.

“We are excited to show African Americans in a different role than comedy, or the funny sidekick,” said Nia Morgan, graduate assistant of multicultural programs. “We get to see a black superhero, which has been missing from the big screen for a long time.”
