University dean writes book on Hebrew prophets

Monday, January 27, 2014

Dr. Victor Matthews, dean of the College of Humanities and Public Affairs and religious studies professor at Missouri State, published the second edition of his book, “The Hebrew Prophets and Their Social World: An Introduction.”

The book is an introduction into the lives of Biblical prophets, specifically covering the historical geography relevant to their message, the economic and social forces that dominate that particular moment in time, and the literary images and metaphors utilized by the prophets.

“Because few modern students share everyday aspects of life in ancient Israel, one of the greatest challenges for modern readers has been to become acquainted with the social and historical forces that played such an important role in the lives of the prophets and their audiences,” said Matthews. “To assist with that process, I have designed this survey as an introduction for students of both the Hebrew prophets as well as the basic elements of their literature and their social world.”

Matthews, of Joplin Mo., has authored or co-authored 17 books and approximately 75 articles, and has been in the religious studies department at Missouri State since 1984.
