Boomer Celebrates Bear Week

Bear Week at Dickerson Park Zoo celebrates Missouri’s bicentennial

MSU partners with zoo for events Aug. 9-15.

July 28, 2021 by Strategic Communication

Missouri State University and Dickerson Park Zoo (DPZ) will host Bear Week Aug. 9-15 to observe Missouri’s bicentennial.

Aug. 10 marks the 200-year anniversary of Missouri’s statehood.

“The bicentennial allows us to celebrate, as well as showcase our past, present and future,” said Shellie Jones, MSU’s assistant director of alumni engagement. “This event highlights two long-standing institutions in our community – MSU and DPZ.”

The two organizations partnered so Springfield community members can celebrate Missouri.

The week’s activities

Guests who visit DPZ dressed in BearWear will receive half off daily zoo admission during the week-long celebration.

Zookeepers will be at the zoo’s Missouri State Bear Country exhibit, 11 a.m. daily for an exclusive “Bear Chat” experience.

“DPZ’s mission is to connect people with animals, and MSU is a valuable partner in sharing this message through the Missouri State Bear Country exhibit,” said Joey Powell, DPZ’s public relations/marketing director.

DPZ will hand out “Build-a-Bear” crafts throughout the week to the first 500 attendees.

MSU will set up a tent Aug. 10 across from the zoo’s train station with Bear-themed giveaways for guests. Attendees in BearWear can enter in drawings for a chance to win prizes.

The partnership

Both MSU and DPZ have a long and proud history as members of the Missouri community.

“Partnering with DPZ is a natural fit,” Jones said. “It’s the perfect destination where alumni (and friends) of all ages can celebrate and learn together.”

MSU celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2005. DPZ will honor its centennial birthday in 2023.

The two organizations are proud to honor Missouri’s 200th birthday.

“It has been so much fun planning this week-long celebration together,” Powell said.

“We look forward to seeing guests in MSU BearWear enjoying DPZ and the outdoors.”
