Scholarship honors commitment to public affairs

Five undergraduate students at Missouri State University recently received recognition for their commitment to the university’s public affairs mission. Each student was awarded a Pepsi-Cola Public Affairs Scholarship in the amount of $1,250. The students were selected based on their involvement in public affairs activities and voluntary service both on and off campus.

Thomas Peters, assistant dean for strategic technology initiatives at the Milner Library at Illinois State University, has been named the new dean of university libraries at Missouri State University. He will begin his duties Aug. 1.

Female students honored for leadership distinction

The annual Missouri State University Women of Distinction award ceremony and reception was held March 29, sponsored by the Gender Studies Committee, to honor this year’s nominees for the prestigious award. Female students were nominated by faculty and staff based on their demonstration of leadership, community service and mentorship of other women.

Professor to assess turtle, frog populations in Oklahoma

Dr. Day Ligon, assistant professor of biology, received a $27,787.50 grant from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. The grant will be used to support the project “Habitat Restoration and Population Assessment of Chicken Turtles and Crawfish Frogs at Bohler Seeps and Sandhills Preserve.”

Delta Zeta wins chapter award

Henson receives award from Illinois State Historical Society

Leigh Henson, professor emeritus in the English department at Missouri State University, recently received a certificate of excellence from the Illinois State Historical Society for his book “The Town Abraham Lincoln Warned: The Living Namesake Heritage of Lincoln, Illinois.”The award was presented at the 32nd Annual Illinois History Symposium April 27.

Hospitality faculty member hosts, educates Turkish delegates

Melanie Grand, an assistant professor in the hospitality and restaurant administration department at Missouri State University, recently hosted a group from Turkey who were participants in the Cochran Fellowship Program. The Cochran Program provides U.S.-based agricultural training opportunities for senior and mid-level specialists and administrators from public and private sectors who are concerned with agricultural trade, agribusiness development, management, policy and marketing.
