Scholarship honors commitment to public affairs

Five undergraduate students at Missouri State University recently received recognition for their commitment to the university’s public affairs mission. Each student was awarded a Pepsi-Cola Public Affairs Scholarship in the amount of $1,250. The students were selected based on their involvement in public affairs activities and voluntary service both on and off campus.

Professor to assess turtle, frog populations in Oklahoma

Dr. Day Ligon, assistant professor of biology, received a $27,787.50 grant from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. The grant will be used to support the project “Habitat Restoration and Population Assessment of Chicken Turtles and Crawfish Frogs at Bohler Seeps and Sandhills Preserve.”

Delta Zeta wins chapter award

Missouri State University’s Delta Zeta sorority, Epsilon Nu chapter, received the Dr. Ruth W. Towne Chapter Cooperation Award for their communication with the national office, their regional directors and campus advisers during a time when they did not have a chapter adviser.

Student wins at regional horse show competition

Alison Bos, a senior agricultural communication major at Missouri State University, took home the Reserve Champion award in the Advanced Western Horsemanship division at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 7 Region 5 Championships.

Henson receives award from Illinois State Historical Society

Dr. D. Leigh Henson, professor emeritus in the English department at Missouri State University, recently received a certificate of excellence from the Illinois State Historical Society for his book “The Town Abraham Lincoln Warned: The Living Namesake Heritage of Lincoln, Illinois.”The award was presented at the 32nd Annual Illinois History Symposium April 27.

Hospitality faculty member hosts, educates Turkish delegates

Melanie Grand, an assistant professor in the hospitality and restaurant administration department at Missouri State University, recently hosted a group from Turkey who were participants in the Cochran Fellowship Program. The Cochran Program provides U.S.-based agricultural training opportunities for senior and mid-level specialists and administrators from public and private sectors who are concerned with agricultural trade, agribusiness development, management, policy and marketing.

Science students recognized for undergraduate research

The College of Natural and Applied Sciences at Missouri State University announced the winners of its annual Undergraduate Research Day during a ceremony following the event, held April 13. The event highlighted research in biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, astronomy, materials science, engineering, geography, geology, planning and mathematics.

ROTC Female Ranger Challenge Team takes first place

Missouri State University’s Military Science ROTC Female Ranger Challenge Team took first place overall at the Brigade Ranger Challenge competition held March 22-23 at Camp Dodge, Iowa. The team took first place overall by winning six of the 11 events, and taking second place in four others.

Political science professor presents research at forum

Dr. Brian Calfano, associate professor of political science, recently spoke at a forum in Washington, D.C. hosted by the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) and the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding. The forum, “Can Muslims Swing the Vote? - A Look at American Muslim Engagement in the 2012 Election,” discussed the key role minority groups will play in the upcoming election.
