Missouri State University professor of art Cedomir Kostovic has received the Award of Excellence in Communication Arts magazine’s Typography Annual competition for his poster, “Tribute to Rene Wanner.”
Kostovic’s poster was among 140 projects out of more than 1,800 entries chosen by a panel of creative professionals. The work is part of an invitational call to action organized by Bienal del Cartel Bolivia, an international poster competition that attracted more than 2,000 professional designers and students at the 2013 event.
The work pays tribute to renowned poster collector Rene Wanner and is featured in the January/February issue of Communication Arts magazine, which is dedicated to achievements in typography. Kostovic’s poster is also featured on the Communication Arts website.
“I appreciate Wanner’s tireless contributions,” Kostovic said. “He personally edits, compiles and promotes major events that deal with international poster designs.”
Kostovic’s design utilized a multifaceted process to achieve the final product.
“To make the curved letterforms, I drew them on sheets of transparent foil, rolled the sheets into tubular shapes, then photographed them with a phone,” Kostovic said. “I traced the images’ letterforms with Adobe Illustrator, then colored and arranged them on the poster to spell the name ‘Rene Wanner.’ The multicolor letterforms represent a collection of diverse poster genres with diverse origins.”
Communication Arts is a professional journal for designers, art directors, design firms, corporate design departments, agencies, illustrators, photographers and everyone involved in visual communications. The 2015 Typography Annual competition draws from an international pool of visual artists.
