“It’s an honor to have been selected by MSHSAA as the host of their State Speech and Debate Tournament from 2015-2019. This is an excellent recruiting event, drawing roughly 120 high schools and 900 students,” said Dr. Eric Morris, associate professor of communication and head of the Spicer Debate Forum.
The Speech, Debate and Theatre Championships include 15 events: three debate categories, two theatrical events and 10 individual events. The 2014 championships feature 905 participants from 123 schools from across the state.
The university was selected by the MSHSAA Board of Directors from proposals submitted by other willing hosts of the annual Speech, Debate and Theatre Championships. The championships were previously held on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia for the past 63 years.
“For 60 years, the event had been on the Mizzou campus, so their selection of the Missouri State University bid is exciting for the debate program, communication department, College of Arts and Letters and the entire university,” said Morris.
