Missouri Mentoring Program receives continued funding

Friday, March 8, 2013

The Missouri Mentoring Program (MMP) received a renewed grant of $131,766.30 from the Missouri Department of Social Services for the continuation of its services to area youth.

The MMP has helped young people become independent and responsible parents and employees for over 10 years. Greene County youths between the ages of 16 and 21 who have faced difficult life challenges are given the opportunity to overcome prior hardship through the program’s motivational classes and mentoring services.

According to Timmarie Hamilton, MMP coordinator, the number of homeless youth in the Springfield area is high. The MMP plays a significant role in reducing the risk of program participants becoming homeless by giving them the skills they need to succeed at work and in life.

“Through MMP, these youth are giving the opportunity to increase their chances of gaining employment, graduating or obtaining a GED, and improving parenting skills and stability,” said Hamilton. “The collaboration that occurs between area businesses, local agencies and MMP to provide our young clients with services that may help lessen the struggles they face is a true example of macro-level social work.”

Grant funds will pay for staff and graduate assistants who will help identify referral sources, recruit local businesses to employ program participants, and provide case management to youths and their mentors.
