Research published in ‘Journal of Cognitive Psychology’
Dr. Erin Buchanan, assistant professor of psychology, and Kathrene Valentine, graduate student in psychology, published their manuscript entitled “JAM-boree: An Application of Observation Oriented Modeling to Judgments of Associative Memory” in the “Journal of Cognitive Psychology.”
Buchanan and Valentine used observation oriented modeling to focus on individual data scores, instead of the average scores for groups. This alternative focus allows researchers to see if an expected pattern of results is apparent in their data.
“Many research publications require some sort of statistical analysis, and ‘null hypothesis significance testing’ dominates in journal articles,” said Dr. Buchanan.
Ten experiments on judgments of memory were analyzed with this new technique, and a guide to the program was created. Buchanan and Valentine show how different patterns of data may be modeled in an effort to expand the use of alternative and more efficient statistical methods.
