Missouri State University Springfield campus sets enrollment record
Thanks to a record 21,059 students on the Springfield campus, official enrollment for the Missouri State University system is up for the fall 2012 semester. Official system enrollment has increased 14 of 16 years from 1996 to 2012.
A total of 23,071 students are enrolled in the Missouri State University system compared to 22,866 last fall. In addition to the 21,059 students on the Springfield campus, 2,102 students are enrolled on the West Plains campus. Some 90 students are enrolled on both campuses; these students were only counted once in the system total.
On the Springfield campus, the total enrollment is up 257 students from last year, surpassing the previous record of 20,949 set in the fall 2010 semester. Springfield students represent every Missouri county, 48 other states and the District of Columbia, and 86 other countries. The average ACT score for incoming freshmen is 23.9, well above state and national averages; 84.2 percent were in the top half of their graduating class and 60.6 percent had a high school GPA of 3.50 or higher.
“The enrollment is very good news, especially given the emphasis we placed on it this past year,” said Missouri State Interim President Clifton M. Smart III. “I am very pleased and proud of the efforts of our faculty, staff, current students and alumni to bounce back after being down some a year ago. Obviously, setting a record for the Springfield campus is significant.
“Enrollment will continue to be important as we do our part to achieve the state and national goals for college graduates. And, enrollment is key to maintaining our funding as we try to improve our programs and opportunities for students.”
Highlights for the official fall enrollment report include:
- The number of underrepresented students is up 265 (13.41 percent) and topped 2,000 for the first time ever
- The number of graduate students is up 125 (3.94 percent)
- The number of international students (excluding the China Campus) is up 95 (7.3 percent)
- The number of high school dual credit students is up 150 (8.5 percent)
