Hospitality student wins prestigious national scholarship

Senior receives Arthur J. Packard Memorial Scholarship
Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Missouri State University student Catherine Blankenship, a senior hospitality and restaurant administration (HRA) major, won the 2012 Arthur J. Packard Memorial Scholarship, one of the top scholarships offered by the hospitality industry. As the first place winner, Blankenship will receive a $5,000 scholarship and a commemorative plaque.

“Catherine’s leadership, involvement, work ethic and industry experience are exceptional,” said Dr. Melissa Dallas, head of the HRA department. “She is a true asset to our department, the university and the hospitality industry.”

The scholarship honors Arthur J. Packard, a third-generation hotelier, whose work for the American Hotel and Lodging Association extended over 30 years. Beginning in 1974, the Packard competition provides scholarships to the most outstanding student of lodging management and to two runners-up through an annual national competition among 76 four-year hospitality programs.

The scholarships are awarded through the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Foundation, the not-for-profit affiliate of the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Recipients were selected based on a combination of hospitality work experience, academic performance, activities and financial need.
