Missouri State’s Springfield campus sees record spring enrollment
Official spring enrollment numbers for Missouri State University’s Springfield campus set a new spring enrollment record for the university. The official spring 2012 enrollment is 19,715 students, up from 19,707 in spring 2011.
The Springfield campus also saw significant increases in several schools and colleges in its official spring enrollment figures.
The spring 2012 official enrollment figures are based on the 20th day of classes, the State of Missouri’s official enrollment census date.
The biggest percentage increase in enrollment occurred in the William H. Darr School of Agriculture, which has 432 students enrolled this year (up from 375 last year), an increase of 15.2 percent.
“The recent additions within the William H. Darr School of Agriculture have created many new opportunities for students,” said Clif Smart, Missouri State interim president. “The addition of the Journagan Ranch (located 60 miles from Springfield) and Bond Learning Center (located just inside the Darr Agricultural Center entrance) are very appealing to students.”
Enrollment in the College of Health and Human Services grew from 3,219 students in spring 2011 to 3,483 in spring 2012, an increase of 8.2 percent.
“We’ve seen a sustained increase in enrollment within health fields,” said Smart. “The demand for health care professionals continues to grow regionally and nationally and Missouri State continues to look for ways to help meet that demand in a wide range of specialties.”
Departments that have seen the greatest growth since spring 2011 include the following:
- Biomedical sciences increased by 11.2 percent to 546, up 55
- Communication increased by 10.9 percent to 356, up 35
- Computer science increased by 11.9 percent to 160, up 17
- Criminology increased by 10.6 percent to 416, up 44
- Hospitality and restaurant administration increased by 17 percent to 234, up 34
- Nursing increased by 14.5 percent to 591, up 75
- Social work increased by 10.3 percent to 246, up 23
- Sports medicine and athletic training increase by 17.1 percent to 164, up 24
- Theatre and dance increased by 10.8 percent to 205, up 20
“We encourage students interested in attending Missouri State for the fall 2012 semester to apply soon if they have not already done so,” said Don Simpson, associate vice president for enrollment management.
Simpson said March 31 is the university’s priority deadline for applying for financial aid.
“We encourage high school juniors to apply for admission early in their senior year,” said Simpson. “High school sophomores and juniors who are interested in attending Missouri State are invited to attend our spring Showcase event on Saturday, April 21.”
Students may apply online.
