Technology, construction management faculty present laser scanning research
Dr. Kerry Slattery, assistant professor of technology and construction management, presented “Evaluation of 3D Laser Scanning for Construction Applications” in the State Department of Transportation’s High-Value Research Projects poster session at the 91st Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 23. The research was funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation through the Illinois Center for Transportation. The research project, completed with co-investigator Dr. Dianne Slattery, associate professor of technology and construction management, was one of only 19 selected nationally for this session.
The research studied cost-effective applications for laser scanning on transportation construction projects. Software was developed to plan scanning operations and analyze point cloud data to map construction projects and calculate earthwork quantities.
The TRB meeting is attended by more than 10,000 transportation professionals from 70 countries.
