Missouri State students recognized as citizen scholars
The Missouri State University Board of Governors designated six students as the 2011 Citizen Scholars at their meeting today (Dec. 16). These students were selected for their dedication to the public affairs mission of the university through coursework, activities and service-learning opportunities.
“The Citizen Scholars are an amazing group of students,” said Board member Cathy Smith, chair of the Student Affairs Committee. “It’s a tremendously difficult selection process for us. These students are successful in their academic endeavors and are active participants in their communities.”
The Citizen Scholar Award, instituted by the Board of Governors and approved in 2007, recognizes full-time students who have made significant accomplishments while enrolled at one of the campuses at Missouri State University. The award is given to students who have contributed to the university, advanced the university’s public affairs mission, and have been significantly engaged in extra-curricular accomplishments and/or in significant service activities in the community.
“I am always amazed at the caliber of students at Missouri State, and I believe these students will continue on to great achievements,” added Smith.
The 2011 recipients of the Citizen Scholar Award are:
- Rebekah Allen, a junior dietetics major from Summersville, Mo.
- Alison Bos, a senior from Billings, Mo. majoring in agricultural communications
- Rachel Greatwood, a senior pre-med student majoring in dietetics from Kansas City, Mo.
- Lindsay Kittrell, a senior nursing major from Republic, Mo.
- Deanne Vassalli, a senior marketing major from Fenton, Mo.

Each student received a crystal globe in recognition of the award and their names have been added to the Citizen Scholar wall in Plaster Student Union.
