Grants to eliminate impact of natural disasters

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Diane May, Missouri State University director of the Center for Resource Planning and Management, received two grants totaling $38,400 from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA). The grants were received on behalf of the Southwest Missouri Council of Governments to update the Multi-Jurisdictional Natural Hazard Mitigation Plans for Barry County and Christian County.  The grants will enable the update of the current plan for each county that sets out strategies and actions to diminish the impacts of natural disasters on life and property.

“We are just completing the same type of plan updates for two other counties – Lawrence and Webster – both grants funded by SEMA,” said May. The projects will be directed by May, who is the principle investigator. Jane Hood, associate director in the Center for Resource Planning and Management; Dr. Paul Rollinson, professor of geology, geography and planning; and Dr. Shuo-Sheng Wu, geospatial technician in the geology, geography and planning department, will work as co-investigators on the projects.
