Public lecture series explores topical scientific subjects

CNAS to begin second set of lectures this fall
Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Missouri State University’s experts will uncover the scientific mysteries of space elevators, sex and evolution, and sensor technology in the public lecture series hosted by the College of Natural and Applied Sciences. During this series, faculty members from a variety of disciplines will present three lectures throughout the fall and spring semesters in Temple Hall, Room 002.

On Oct. 13, Dr. Emmett Redd, professor of physics astronomy and materials science, will discuss the prospect of creating a space elevator from 7:30-8:30 p.m. In his lecture, Redd will talk about published books by scientists, such as the author of the “The Space Elevator,” Dr. Bradley C. Edwards.

Redd will discuss Edward’s final report of his second NASA funded study and present his vision for the space elevator. A science fair elevator prototype will be available for demonstration and inspection.

On Nov. 10, Dr. John Heywood, professor of biology, will discuss sex evolution and types of reproduction from 7:30-8:45 p.m. “I will spend about half of my talk convincing you that sex is bizarre, and the second half exploring some of the current hypotheses for the evolutionary origin and subsequent maintenance of sex in higher plants and animals,” said Heywood.

In the spring semester, Dr. Erich Steinle, associate professor of chemistry, will discuss the ongoing sensor research at Missouri State University along with the current and future sensor technology of specialized devices encountered on a daily basis.
