Associate professor awarded grant for research
Dr. Kartik Ghosh, Missouri State University associate professor of physics, astronomy and materials science, received a $264,747 grant from the National Science Foundation. Ghosh received the grant for the “RUI: N-Type Ferromagnetism in Oxide Based Dilute Magnetic Semiconductors” project, which will enable the purchase of more research instruments and support the expenses of hiring specialists.
The two-year project will be directed by Ghosh, who is the principle investigator. Dr. Pawan Kahol, professor and associate dean in the Collage of Natural and Applied Sciences, and Dr. Ram Gupta, research assistant professor in the physics, astronomy and material science department, will work as co-principle investigators on the project.
The scope of work in the investigation will involve the development of ferromagnetism in oxide based semiconductors. Gupta said, “Making room temperature ferromagnetic dilute magnetic semiconductors is always a challenge. We will try to develop room temperature ferromagnetism for practical applications in spintronics devices.”
The grant will enable the team to carry out investigations on carrier concentration to determine the strong magnetization induced by a weak field in oxides. “As ferromagnetism largely depends on carrier concentration, modification in carrier concentration by varying growth conditions could provide ferromagnetism in oxides,” said Gupta.
