Panhellenic Council recognized for risk management efforts

National Panhellenic Award to be given during National Panhellenic Conference meeting
Tuesday, August 25, 2009

The Panhellenic Council at Missouri State University recently won a National Panhellenic Award in risk management for campuses with six to 12 chapters from the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC). The Panhellenic Council will receive the award during the NPC Annual Meeting Oct. 8-11 in Tampa, Fla.

To be considered for a National Panhellenic Award, the Panhellenic Council submitted an application that explained and documented risk management programs the council provided over the past two years. These programs included co-sponsored events, speakers, workshops, officer education and the initiation of new policies concerning topics such as alcohol use, illegal drugs, hazing, sexual abuse and facility management.

“Risk management is something that the Greek community has worked hard to improve over the past few years, so being nationally recognized for our efforts and achievements shows our members that we are on the right track to having a safe and healthy community,” said Megan Akert, Panhellenic president. “Hopefully this award will inspire future councils to continue to make proactive and innovative resolutions to further our efforts in the area of risk management.”

At Missouri State University, the Panhellenic Council is the governing body of six national social sororities and two local sororities. The Panhellenic Council acts as the judicial board, works with sororities to provide educational programming and coordinates the formal fall recruitment.

The NPC is an advocacy and support group for its members, such as college panhellenics. Through its work with panhellenic councils and national chapter organizations, the NPC provides guidelines and regulations to create a unified sorority experience.
